Why You Should Plan Your Food

This month we are moving to the topic of health and I want to start with food. The reason I want to start with food is because when I went gluten-free it was life changing for me. I had suffered from depression and different forms of anxiety and I didn’t really start feeling better until I changed what I was eating. I wondered why my doctor didn’t start with what I was eating.

Instead of asking what I was eating, she prescribed medications for me to take to feel better. I would say they didn’t make me feel better, but they did lessen the discomfort of anxiety and depression.

When I went off my meds (without her consent!) and I went gluten free, 90% of my anxiety was gone. My belly aches were gone. My head was clear. I felt amazing, like I just woke up from hibernation. I felt like I missed out on so much of my life because until then, I felt like crap most of the time.

I think if my doctor would have started with food, I could have eliminated the anxiety and depression way sooner. So that is why I want to start with food and today I’m talking about why it’s so important to plan it out.

By now you should be used to planning. Planning is how I get everything done, so get used to it! It is something you will always do. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time. Sometimes when you are first setting up a system, it does take time, but then after you know how it’s going to go, you just plug and play.

Okay so here is why it’s a really good idea to plan your food.

you know what to eat

First off, if you plan what to eat, you are going to know exactly what you are going to be eating for the day. This is good because when you are hungry, or you are fixing the kids lunch, you will already know what you are going to be eating. You don’t have to start snacking on the chips while you’re making their sandwiches.

When you find yourself hungry and you wander into the kitchen and you open the cupboard and look at the food, you will remember what you decided you can eat. You know what you can eat and what not to eat.

This doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy to say no to what you don’t want to eat. It is going to be very difficult. But, if you commit to the reason why you want to change what you are eating, it will be easier.

you know when to eat

The second reason why it’s a good idea to plan you food is because you will know when to eat. I think knowing when to eat is just as important. The human body was designed for intermittent fasting. If you want to set a goal for yourself, this would be a great one. I can easily go 15+ hours without eating.

I stop eating at 6pm and then I don’t eat until 9am. On Sunday’s I can do a fat fast and go a lot longer. Often times I will only have a Bulletproof coffee in the morning and not eat until after church, around 1-2pm.

And I don’t even get hungry.

I used to think people who did this were crazy. I used to have to carry food in my purse because I would get so hungry and shaky. I thought I would die if I didn’t eat. Or at least pass out.

The key to being able to fast for such a long time is to remove flour and sugar from your diet. We will talk more about that in coming posts.

Okay so when to eat. You decide when you want to eat and then you only eat during that window of time.

We have been taught that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but is it necessary to have breakfast? I’m going to ask you to consider this.

I think the most important meal of the day is the one you eat when you break your fast

Does that make sense?

Now you don’t have to feel guilty for skipping breakfast.

If you like eating in the evening, just start eating later in the day, so you’re not eating all day.

If you set a time of when you will eat and you know what you will eat, you will start having more control over what you are eating.

You will wander in the kitchen and you will notice the time and you will be able to say, Oh right, I’m not eating until 9am or whatever.

I think it makes it easier to wait a few more minutes when you have a plan.

you know what to buy

Okay. The third reason you want to plan your food is  so that you know what to buy. When you know what you are going to be eating, you know exactly what to buy when you get groceries.

You don’t have to wander up and down all the aisles looking at all the food you decided you’re not going to eat but that looks good in the moment.

You will have a list and you will be able to go in and get your food and get out.

Start practicing shopping with a list and only buying the things that are on your list.

This is going to save you both time and money.

It is also going to help you to only eat what you said you would eat because it is the only thing you are buying.

you can eliminate snacking + excuses

I have one more tip here. So what happens. You know what to eat, when to eat, and what to buy. All the sudden you have eliminated so many excuses.

You have eliminated the option to snack.

You have eliminated the option to munch on things when you’re fixing food for the kids.

You know what to eat and when to eat and eating outside of your window should not be allowed.

Now you have to be committed if you want this to be true. You have to honor your commitment to yourself.

Because you can read this and then tell yourself it’s not going to work and throw the bagels in the grocery cart and add the candy bar at the check out.

You have to believe you can be the person you want to be when it comes to food.

I have done extensive training on food and it’s reaction in the body as part of my coach training. If you want help eliminating the desire for certain foods, I can help you.

Because when you start eliminating sugar and flour and only eating when you say you will and what you say you will, it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

This is when you have to look at the result you ultimately want to create and ask yourself how uncomfortable you are willing to be to get there.

If you do the hard work and you get to your goal weight, think of what you would be thinking about yourself.

You are amazing and you deserve to feel amazing inside and out. Planning your food is a great way to get to your amazingness.
