10 Reasons to Be Creative

Hey Friends! It’s September and kids are back to school and this is the time of year that we moms tend to have our own Happy New Year party. I’ve always loved the fall and going back to school. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I love planning and planners and all the supplies.

So, this month I decided to write about what happens for me in September, and what I think a lot of you might be doing as well. Maybe you can relate.

In August I start looking forward to the the coming school year and when I think about the kids being gone for 7 hours I immediately fill my day with all sorts of creative projects.

Keep in mind, this happens when it’s still August, so all these projects are in my head. I have thoughts like, As soon as the kids are in school I’m going to do this. I can’t wait to do something fun when they are in school all day.

But, and if you have kids in school, you know how this goes. What happens is that the kids start school and for some reason, life doesn’t slow down. We wonder why we thought we would have an extra 7 hours to do something fun because that’s obviously not going to happen.

But here’s the thing. Whatever you want to happen, you have to make happen. If you want to be spending a big part of your day doing something creative, you’re the one who has to make it happen.

I know what happens when school starts and life is still ‘busy’. You end up telling yourself you can’t do what you want to do. That you never get to have any fun. That what you want doesn’t matter.

Nothing could be further from the truth, and in today’s post, I’m going to give you 10 reasons why you should be creative, even when life doesn’t slow down.

1 | you grow

When I was doing some reading about creativity I discovered that the root of creative actually means ‘to grow’ and I love this. I love it because when you take the time to be creative you are growing and changing who you are. You are becoming someone new. You are learning a new skill.

2 | you are focused

When you spend time being creative, you have to focus. When you constrain to the one creative thing, you eliminate all other distractions. This clears your mind. Being able to focus on one task is a skill you can learn.

3 | you know how to have fun

When you are creative, you have something to look forward to. You know how to have fun. This makes it easier to do all the mom stuff because you have your creative time to look forward to.

4 | you make yourself a priority

I love this tip because when you make yourself a priority, you are telling yourself that you matter. You create a habit of taking care of yourself and letting yourself do what you want to do. So important.

5 | you become interesting

Creative people are interesting. When you spend time working on your creative projects, you have something to talk about. When people ask how your week was, you have something interesting to tell them.

6 | you become a better problem solver

When you go about your days running errands, you are going to find other things interesting and you’re going to look for ways to make what you’re doing easier or better. You use curiosity to find new ways to do things.

7 | you become more self-confident

Creativity can help you grow your self-confidence. You can feel proud about the work you do and the work other creatives do, even if no one else likes what you do. You are the only one who needs to like it, and when you can feel good about that, that is when your self-confidence will grow.

8 | you become open-minded

When you spend time being creative you open your mind to things. Anything is possible because you’re willing to entertain new ideas. There was no wheel until someone thought of creating it. There was no iPhone until someone thought of creating it. Open your mind to the possibility of what you can create that has never been created before.

9 | you are a dreamer

Creativity allows you to dream and to think bigger. This does not mean that everything you dream about you need to make happen. But the way to use your dreams is to have them help you define your future. You can decide what you want your life to be like, and then you can get creative to figure out how you can make it happen.

10 | you make life fulfilling

If you felt fulfilled and you were doing something creative, what would you be thinking? What I have found is that when I spend time being creative, I feel fulfilled. It’s like this part of me was lacking and I took care of that part and now I feel whole. I’m usually thinking something like, This is so fun. or I’m so glad I took the time to do this.

I love looking back over my week to see what I accomplished and when I have things done that extend outside of the everyday tasks of motherhood, I feel better.

In a nutshell, creativity makes me feel fulfilled and energized. It’s so worth spending my time being creative. But I want to know how it is for you.
